MEET OUR MAMA MUSE – KERSTIN
…parenting in heels and living in London
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING THE WOMEN YOU ARE TODAY & MOTHERHOOD SO FAR
Originally from Australia, I currently live in London with my husband and my one-year-old daughter. My career started in a very corporate environment after graduating from University, from working in politics, law, and then higher education before taking maternity leave. For now, I focus all my energy on my family and luxury parenting, travel, and lifestyle blog luxmumma.com. Motherhood is by far my most rewarding role.
TELL US ABOUT PARENTING IN HEELS? YOU MAKE IT LOOK EFFORTLESS!
Thank you so much! I love a great pair of heels and continue wearing them even when running after an active toddler. Although they are not as high as they used to be, and I do also keep a spare pair of ballet flats in my handbag, just in case.
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR NEW MOM’S TO LOOK, & MORE IMPORTANTLY FEEL GREAT AFTER HAVING A BABY?
I do believe it’s important for every new mum to take that ‘me’ time at the beginning, even if only for a short time in between mum duty. For example, keep doing the things you would normally have done before becoming a mother, such as perhaps attending that yoga class, or booking in a pamper session at the salon.
DO YOU HAVE “PYJAMA DAYS”?
Yes – I find they are the best kind of days! Most Sunday mornings, much to my daughter’s delight, my husband builds a blanket and pillow fort in our living room, where we have quality family time spent mostly in our pyjamas.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU? DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS OR “WINNING FORMULAS” FOR OTHER MUM’S OUT THERE, TO JUGGLE FAMILY LIFE AND WORK LIFE?
I find every day is a little different and no two days are the same. Each day is usually planned around my daughter’s classes from baby sensory, book club, to swimming classes. At times it can be quite difficult to juggle both work and family life, particularly when work schedules get busier. I find that being organised and planning ahead helps. Also, setting your priorities is important, such as understanding when you need to ‘switch off’ from work mode and devote your focus to family life.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT’S REALLY SURPRISED YOU ABOUT MOTHERHOOD SO FAR?
I was surprised at how everything is put into perspective, as my main priority now is my family and being there for my husband and daughter. I am also fortunate that I get to work from home and I can witness every step she takes, and watch her reach all her milestones.
YOU TRAVEL A LOT! WHAT’S THE ONE DESTINATION YOU’D LIKE TO GO TO WITH AVA, AND IS TRAVELLING DIFFERENT FOR YOU NOW YOU’RE A MUM?
I like the idea of making memories rather than collecting things, so making memories around the world is fantastic while experiencing new cities, and cultures. I have always wanted to visit the Maldives, and we are fortunate to be heading there very soon this month. I cannot wait for Ava to experience this part of the world and see all the wonderful sea life. Travelling is different when you have children, and it involves clever strategy to ensure your little ones do not get bored on the flight.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 TIPS FOR MOMS WHO TRAVEL WITH KIDS?
- Take a very light compact travel stroller with you, one which folds up into the overhead compartment of the plane and fits in between the aisles.
- Pack a goodie bag filled with toys, stickers, books, and other small gadgets they can play with on the plane for entertainment.
- Make good use of the family areas which are available at most airports, particularly during stopovers on long haul flights.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A MUM, AND WHAT DO YOU FIND THE HARDEST?
It is lovely to have a little person who looks up to you, and it makes you want to be the best role model you can be. The hardest part would be the inevitable lack of sleep all parents are all too familiar with.
RAISING CHILDREN IN THE DIGITAL WORLD, DO YOU / HAVE YOU USED ANY APPS TO HELP GUIDE YOU DURING YOUR PREGNANCY AND MOTHERHOOD JOURNEY SO FAR? IF SO, ANY SUGGESTIONS AND/OR “WARNINGS”?
There are a myriad of pregnancy and parenting apps out there, all of which are useful for the most part. However, it is important for mums to understand these are a guide only. For example, if they have any concerns about their pregnancy, they should visit a health care professional and not rely solely on an app for advice.
YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA IMAGES, ARE THE PICTURES TAKEN WITH A PROFESSIONAL CAMERA OR YOUR CELL PHONE?
They are a mixture of both my Olympus DSLR and my cell phone. Whilst the DLSR has a better image resolution, I tend to use both as I find it can be cumbersome carrying around my DSLR, so sometimes a cell phone is ideal.
CURRENTLY, WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 APPS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT ON YOUR PHONE.
AND FINALLY, WHEN LEAVING THE HOUSE WHAT WILL YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR K’LEA BABY BAG
My Fifi & Friends Cleansing Wipes, which are great to clean sticky fingers, wipe away stains and they mop up every spill!
